What if the pandemic never happened? What if there were a portal that could take you to a world where it didn't? What would be gained? What would be lost? These are the questions answered by the "Portal Project," a MAP-grant recipient workshop exploring the themes of loss and potential new worlds surrounding the pandemic and how it impacted our lives. Below are images from a staged reading from 10/11-10/12 of 2025 in Theatre Communications Group's space. This workshop featured a visual installation crafted by Montserrat Mendez and QR codes featuring recordings and writings created by Flux Theatre Ensemble members as well as a performed section directed by Heather Cohn, written by Sarah Elizabeth Grace, Justin Woo, Corinna Schulenberg, and Montserrat Mendez and performed by Miranda Holliday, Justin Woo, Sarah Grace, Neo Cihi, and Fiona Hansen.
The project had an original staged reading at 520 8th Ave. in December 2023. From Flux Theatre Ensemble's site:
"What if there was a universe where the COVID-19 pandemic never happened? How would your life be different? What would you talk about with that other version of you? And if you could…would you cross through a portal into that other world?
In Portal Magic Consensus Time, a group of theatremakers have discovered just such a portal, only they’re not sure what to do with it. Share it with the world, or only those they trust? Or make sure no one else ever opens it again? Join us for a staged reading of this participatory play where together we’ll decide what to do with this portal magic."
In both iterations of the project, I wrote and performed in the scripted sections. In the most recent reading, my poetry, spoken words, and vocal performance were featured in QR codes that accompanied the installations.
